Hit the Beach
Take a rental car—which is simple to obtain at the airport any time of the day and is necessary for Sicily if you want to travel outside the cities—and drive the 90 minutes down the coastal highway east to Cefalu. One of the island's most stunning waterfront settlements is this beach hamlet on the north coast, which combines centuries-old churches with beach bars offering delicious grilled fish on sandy shores. Homes and businesses are chiselled into the hillside. For an early seafood lunch, arrive late in the morning (parking near the beach). Get an outdoor seat at Lo Scoglio Ubriaco so you can savour their scampi pasta and plates of fresh sardines with ocean views—and the required bottle of crisp Vermentino. The central waterfront road, Via Carlo Ortolani di Bordonaro, is dotted with modest restaurants.
Wine Tasting in the Countryside
Even though the best-known Sicilian wine is made in the east, Menfi, home of Planeta, one of Sicily's most prestigious wine estates, is a simple day drive from Palermo. The good autostrada from Palermo takes you there in about an hour via the interior. However, we advise leaving earlier in the day and taking the scenic route, which will take you down the coastal highway heading west toward Trapani and past beaches like Tonnaro di Scopello. Swim or stroll along the beach before continuing south to Planeta in time for lunch. Look at the estate's 16th-century farmhouse, which has been in the family for 17 generations and is located on 720 acres of chardonnay and Nero d'avola vines. The influential Planeta family manages the estate and owns six island wineries. Just remember to reserve lunch and tastings on their website in advance; walk-ins might not be accepted.

Phenomenal Markets and Grand Cathedrals
Choose an early morning flight to Palermo, so you have the entire day to explore this exciting city. It has some of Italy's most beautiful cathedrals, beach access, cuisine, hidden passageways, and coded paintings left over from the Beati Paoli. This secret society predated the modern Mafia. Unfortunately, Palermo has a better selection of hotels. Still, the Grand Hotel Palme in the city centre has spacious rooms with club chairs and marble bathrooms that are immediately close to the stunning Teatro Politeama from the 19th century, which houses Sicily's orchestra. Do as the Palermitani and head to the food market after checking in and leaving your things.
