Brindisi is a major city on the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy, in the province of Apulia, with a population of just over 88,000 people. Due to its strategic location and active trade with Greece and other nations across the Adriatic Sea, this natural port has played a major historical role in the development of this region of Italy. Agriculture, chemical processing, electricity generation, and commercial port activities all contribute to the city's diverse economy. Legend has it that the epic hero Diomedes founded Brindisi, but records show that it has been occupied in some form since ancient Roman and Greek times. Brindisi has been ruled by various empires and kingdoms throughout history, including the Ostrogoths, Lombards, and Kings of Sicily, due to its strategic location on the Adriatic coast. During World War II, the city even served as Italy's temporary capital, hosting King Victor Emmanuel III. Brindisi is still an important port on the eastern coast, and its diverse economy makes it one of Apulia's most important cities. Brindisi benefits from its coastal location as a tourist destination and has a fantastic port and harbour to explore. The city also has a number of beautiful structures, including the Castello Alfonsino and the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Casale. If architecture isn't your thing, visit one of the beautiful beaches in the area, such as Lido Azzurro, for some sunbathing and relaxation. Finally, if you fancy a day trip, Brindisi is close to several other fantastic locations such as Lecce and Mesagne.
