Begin your tour at Málaga's Historic Center. It is a great place to get oriented and learn about the city's history. See the evolution of civilizations by visiting the Alcazaba, Gibralfaro Castle, and the Roman Theater.
Take lunch at Atarazanas Market, then stroll through Málaga's Gardens. Atarazanas food market is located in Malaga's historic centre. From the historic centre, stroll through Parque Málaga, a swath of palm trees and hedges through which parrots flit. Muelle Uno, a modern port promenade with various restaurants and shops, is a great place to unwind. To enjoy the earthy flavours of Málaga, buy locally produced almonds or chestnuts from street vendors along the way.
Wander to the Gardens of Pedro Luis Alonso and then up Mount Gibralfaro through the dramatic Puerta Oscura gardens as the sun sets.
Then, tour the city's tapas bars in the evening. Tapas culture in Málaga is an inexpensive way to sample local dishes and drinks, with both traditional and innovative approaches. Crawl from bar to bar on a tapas tour. Las Merchanas has a traditional tavern vibe, Antigua Casa de Guardia has a selection of sweet local wines, and La Recova has a kitschy vibe.
Visit Frigiliana, Spain's most beautiful white village with views of the Costa del Sol. It is a microcosm of Spanish history, with communities of Muslims, Catholics, and Jews coexisting. The breakfast consists of a large slice of fresh bread with various spreads and a coffee with gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options.
Next, go to Nerja, a charming seaside town known for its rugged coast and sweeping views, and enjoy activities like hitting the nearby beaches, some tucked-in quiet coves, kayaking, and visiting the Caves of Nerja.
The beach town of Nerja and the white village of Frigliana can be explored on your own or with a guided tour. For lunch, a breadcrumb and cornflour dish with fresh seafood, and then indulge in some of the town's sweets.
Then return to Málaga as the sun sets over the horizon, painting the sea in dusk colours. After exploring, refresh and proceed to dinner.
Bodega Bar El Pimpi is a Málaga wine cellar that celebrates Andalusian tradition and is frequented by celebrities such as Antonio Banderas.
It's a beach day! Go to Pedregalejo Beach in Malaga, a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the Mediterranean waters. Swim in the Mediterranean at nearby beaches such as Playa de las Acacias and Playa El Dedo. These curving, sandy beaches contrast with the quaint houses of old fishing villages and the beachside bars known as chiringuitos.
After soaking up the rays, find a table at a chiringuito and order various plates of cuisines to share.
Spend your afternoon at the City Museum.
Return to the city centre to visit some of the city's cultural institutions.
Málaga has a diverse cultural offering, ranging from the Málaga Museum to fine art centres affiliated with international museums, such as the Carmen Thyssen Museum and the Centre Pompidou Málaga.
