Fes is a city in northern Morocco that is known as the country's cultural centre and a popular tourist destination for culture lovers. The Fes El Bali walled medina, with mediaeval Marinid architecture, bustling souks, and an old-world ambience, is the main attraction. Religious schools such as Bou Inania and Al Attarine, both built in the 14th century and ornamented with magnificent wood carvings and beautiful tile work, may be seen in the medina. Fes, often spelled Fez, is one of the best-preserved mediaeval towns in the world, bordered by the Atlas Mountains' foothills and situated at the crossroads of old trade routes. The most ancient and spectacular of Morocco's four imperial cities, this 1 million-person centre is almost 1,000 years old. While Fes is divided into three sections, most visitors stick to Fes el-walled Bali's medina. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a maze of tight, twisting, high-walled passageways where getting lost is half of the fun. Donkeys and bicycles compete for space in cobblestone streets, where stall merchants entice you into their closet-sized stores.
