Get a quick look at your holiday experience
Cork, dubbed the "true capital of Ireland" by its locals, is a short-break destination with a youthful attitude and regional culture that gives it a distinct ambience. The city's heart is an island, surrounded by the river Lee, with small 17th-century streets and historic relics blending with modern retail malls, restaurants, and pubs to create a rich short holiday experience. Day Trip to Cobh
Cobh (pronounced "cove") was one of the highlights of my three-day trip to Cork. Cobh has experienced a few name changes, which is an intriguing fact. Following various Irish names (Cuan a Neimheadh), it was renamed Cove in 1750 before being called Queenstown to mark Queen Victoria's visit in 1849. In 1922, Queenstown was renamed Cobh during the War of Independence. Cobh is a Gaelicisation of the term cove and has no meaning in Irish.
Shandon Historic Area and Blarney Castle
The third day of a three-day programme in Cork included a morning excursion to the city's oldest district. A morning visit to Shandon Historic Area is a terrific way to discover Cork. Part of the Mardyke Walk took us along the Lee River before ascending the steep slope to the Shandon neighbourhood. It's a charming neighbourhood, and it was great to see St. Anne's Church and the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Anne. There's also the Shandon Sweet Shop to check out.
Day 1
Cork City
The English Market is packed with fantastic food and is a perfect spot to taste local cuisine for lunch. Cork is a great city to explore and one of those places where the streets are the attractions. Allow plenty of time to explore the several bridges across the Lee River and the English Market area. After some meandering, proceed to St. Fin Barre's Cathedral. This ornate Protestant cathedral is a bit of a walk from the English Market, but it is well worth the effort.
