Split, Croatia's second largest city and a vibrant place that perfectly blends modern and ancient, is located on the stunning Dalmatian Coast. It's also one of the Croatian cities that has served as a backdrop for Game of Thrones, and fans can take a guided tour to learn more about their favorite scenes. Starting with the Romans, the town has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years, with the Byzantines, Croats, Venetians, and finally the Austrians, who only left in 1918. As a result of these diverse influences, the city's beautifully preserved Old Town offers a wealth of historical attractions. Split is also known for housing the UNESCO-listed Diocletian's Palace, one of the most impressive remaining Roman monuments anywhere on the planet. It also houses the excellent Archeological Museum and the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery, which many consider to be Croatia's best art museum. Split's main tourist center is located just east of its lovely waterfront promenade. Some of Croatia's best restaurants, entertainment venues, and hotels can be found here. There are also a number of fantastic day trips from Split that will take you to other parts of this beautiful country. The ancient city of Salona, as well as the beautiful beaches of Zlatni Rat, Brela, the Pakleni Islands, Solta, and Milna, are among them.
