Cairo
Egypt · 4 nights
Cairo is a monument to thousands of years of culture. It sits on the banks of the great Nile River, where the desert meets lush green land. As the home of more than 20 million people, it is a busy metropolis where people from all times and countries live together. Egypt's artefacts from the Pharaonic era, Islamic buildings from the Middle Ages, and beautiful Coptic churches, every corner of Cairo has a story. The Pyramids of Giza have stood still on the city's edge for a long time. In contrast, churches like Al-Azhar, which have many small decorations, may seem modern, but they have been around for over a thousand years. Khan Al-Khalili is a busy neighbourhood where you can look for deals while smelling the delicious smells of aged oud, newly brewed coffee, and lightly spiced street food. If you like food, you can eat through Egypt's long and interesting past. Enjoy the flavours of traditional meals like molokhia or koshari, or indulge in sweet treats like konafa and basbousa that are full of honey. These go well with a cool cup of hibiscus tea or a hearty cup of Egyptian coffee. Cairo's real heart is in its lively areas. Zamalek, an island district, has modern art bars and buildings that look like Europe inspired them. This contrasts historic Islamic Cairo, which is made up of winding alleys and beautiful minarets, and Downtown, where neon lights and late-night shisha shops line the streets. The country around Cairo is full of beautiful scenery for people who want to escape the crowds in Cairo. Wadi El Rayan, with its peaceful waterfalls, the oasis of Fayoum, and the coastal charm of Ain Sokhna, are all great places to get away from the city and relax under clear blue skies with UK to Cairo.
